What is dry hire, and why is it legal in California?

Quick answerUnder California ABC guidelines a private host may legally buy alcohol at retail for their own private event and hire bartenders to serve it. The alcohol belongs to the host. La Barra Co. never sells it, marks it up or profits from it — we provide the labor, equipment and service. Every bartender holds a current California RBS certification, verifiable through the state ABC.

The full answer

Under California ABC guidelines, a private host may legally buy alcohol at retail for their own private event and hire bartenders to serve it. That is dry hire.

The alcohol belongs to you, the host. La Barra Co. never sells it, never marks it up and never profits from it. We provide the labor, the equipment and the service. This is not a workaround — it is the standard framework used by catering and event brands across the state.

Two conditions keep it clean: the alcohol is purchased by the host and not resold by the vendor, and every bartender serving it holds a current California RBS certification, which state law requires and which is verifiable through the state ABC. Every bartender on our team holds one.

If a mobile bar quotes you a price that includes the liquor, ask them under what license they are selling it. That is the question that separates a compliant operator from one who hasn't thought it through.
