The divorce parties that work are celebrations of what comes next, not commentary on what happened. Keep it small, keep it adult, and keep the theme in the drink names rather than on the walls. Three cocktails, a short guest list of people who were genuinely in your corner, and a hard end time. The ones that go wrong are the ones built around an ex who is not in the room.
Divorce parties have moved from novelty to a normal category of adult celebration, and the ones we work almost never look like the internet version. There is rarely a cake shaped like anything. What there usually is: thirty people in a backyard, good food, a proper bar, and someone who has had a genuinely hard two years finally having a good night.
That is the version worth planning for, and it needs a slightly different structure from a birthday.
Get the tone right first
There is a fork in the road at the planning stage and everything downstream depends on which way you go. A party about what comes next feels like a beginning and people leave energised. A party about the ex feels like a grievance with a bar attached, and guests can tell within ten minutes.
The practical test: if the person being divorced walked in, would the room be embarrassed? If the answer is yes, the decor has gone too far. Keep the humour in the drink names, where it lands warm and disappears after one laugh, rather than in signage that has to sit in the room for four hours.
Keep the guest list short
Twenty to fifty. This is not an event that gets better with scale, because its entire value is that the room is made of people who actually showed up during the hard part.
Two guest list decisions to make deliberately. Mutual friends — some will come, some will feel caught in the middle, and the kind thing is to tell them plainly that there is no obligation and no hard feelings either way. And family — parents and siblings at a divorce party can shift the tone from celebratory to therapeutic in one conversation. Some people want that; most do not. Decide on purpose rather than by default.
The three-cocktail menu
Three drinks, named with a light touch, covering the whole room. Here is the lineup we build most often.
1. The Clean Break — grapefruit and mezcal paloma
1.5 oz blanco tequila, 0.5 oz mezcal espadín, 2 oz fresh grapefruit, 0.5 oz lime, 0.25 oz agave, topped with soda, Tajin rim, grapefruit wheel. Bright, a little smoky, endlessly drinkable, and it batches so the bar never has a line. This will be sixty percent of your orders.
2. Better Off — a proper old fashioned
2 oz rye, 0.25 oz demerara syrup, two dashes of bitters, large cube, orange twist. One spirit-forward drink for the people who want something to sit with rather than something to sip fast. Batch it fully — our old fashioned guide has the spec — and it pours in eight seconds.
3. The Fresh Start — zero-proof and actually good
3 oz grapefruit, 0.5 oz rosemary syrup, 0.5 oz lime, topped with sparkling water, rosemary sprig, same glass as the paloma. Divorce parties tend to have a higher-than-average share of guests who are not drinking, for all the usual reasons plus a few specific ones. Make this one properly and put it on the board with the same weight as the others. The mocktail guide has nine more.
Add beer and a couple of wines and the menu is done. A full call bar at a party of thirty is money spent on bottles that go home mostly full.

Format: the four-hour version
The structure that works is closer to a good dinner party than a night out. Our default:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| Hour 1 | Doors, bar open, food out immediately. No programme, just arrival. |
| Hour 2 | Food continues. This is the hour the room actually settles and talks. |
| Hour 3 | Peak. Music up slightly. If there is a toast, it goes here — short. |
| Hour 4 | Bar closes at the top of the hour. Coffee, dessert, the long goodbye. |
| End | Hard stop. Rideshares pre-arranged. |
Two details that matter. Food from minute one — these parties often start with people who have had an emotionally heavy month and no lunch, and an empty-stomach start is how a celebration turns into a difficult evening. And a hard end time, with the bar closing an hour before it. A night that ends cleanly at 11 is remembered as a great party; the same night trailing to 2 a.m. with four people is remembered differently.
If there is a toast, keep it to one, keep it under two minutes, and have it be about the person, not the marriage.

Where to host it
Most of these happen at a private home, which is the right call: it is cheap, it is comfortable, and nobody is watching the clock on a venue contract. If you are hosting at a rented property, read our guide on party rules at rentals in California first — standard short-term rentals prohibit events, and it is better to know that before the invitations go out.
Two practical notes for a home event. Warn the neighbours, because a party they knew about is a party they tolerate. And plan rideshare visibly — a code on the menu card is enough, and at this particular kind of party it matters more than usual.
One last thing
The best divorce parties we have worked had one quiet thing in common: at some point in the third hour, the host stopped hosting and just sat down with their friends. Which is an argument for having someone else behind the bar.
We work adult events only, all guests 21 or over, across Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego and the Inland Empire. Small guest lists are genuinely welcome — send the date and a headcount and we will text back a real number.
Frequently asked questions
What is a divorce party?
A private adult celebration marking the end of a marriage and the start of what comes next. In practice most of the ones we work look like a good dinner party or a milestone birthday: twenty to fifty people, a proper bar, real food, and a room full of the friends who showed up during a hard year. The tone is closer to gratitude than revenge, which is also why they tend to be genuinely fun.
What cocktails do you serve at a divorce party?
Three is the right number, with the theme living in the names rather than in gimmick ingredients. A bright citrus-forward drink, one spirit-forward option, and a proper zero-proof build covers the room. Give them names that are playful rather than pointed — the joke should land warm, because these rooms often include mutual friends and the humour ages badly if it is aimed at a person.
How many people should you invite to a divorce party?
Fewer than you think. Twenty to fifty is the range that works. This is not an event that improves with scale, because its value comes from the room being made of people who were actually there for you. Our Intimate package covers 30 to 50 guests at $695 all-inclusive, which is the right size for most of these.
Is a divorce party a bad idea if you have kids?
Not inherently, but keep it entirely separate from them. Adults only, off-site or on a night they are elsewhere, and nothing that could be photographed and end up somewhere it should not. La Barra Co works adult events only with all guests 21 or over, which handles that part automatically. Anything aimed at the other parent is the thing to avoid, for reasons that have nothing to do with the party.
What should you not do at a divorce party?
Three things reliably sour these nights: decor or a cake aimed at the ex, inviting people who are still close to both parties without warning them, and no end time. The first turns a celebration into a grievance, the second puts guests in an impossible position, and the third is how a good night becomes a long one. Set a hard finish, close the bar an hour before it, and let it end well.
Do you need a bartender for a party of 30?
It changes the night more than people expect. At 30 guests one bartender means nobody is in the kitchen making drinks, nobody is dealing with ice, and the host is actually at their own party. Our Intimate package is $695 all-inclusive for 30 to 50 guests, covering the bar, an RBS-certified bartender, ice, mixers, glassware, garnish, tools, setup and breakdown. You buy the alcohol.
