The short answer

Airbnb has banned parties and events at listings worldwide since 2020, made the ban permanent in 2022, and caps most listings at 16 guests. So the honest answer is: not at a standard Airbnb. What works is an event-permitted property — a venue rental, an estate that markets itself for events, or a host who has explicitly approved your event in writing. We only staff events where the property owner has approved it, and where every guest is 21 or over.

This question arrives most weeks, usually phrased optimistically: we rented a house in the hills for a birthday, can you bring a bar? The answer depends entirely on what kind of property it is, and the distinction matters more than most hosts realise.

The short version of Airbnb's policy

Airbnb announced a global ban on parties and events at its listings in August 2020, initially framed as a pandemic measure, and made the ban permanent in June 2022. Alongside the ban, the platform caps most listings at 16 guests.

A few things follow from that. A standard Airbnb host cannot simply give you permission for a party, because the restriction sits at the platform level rather than the listing level. Violations can end a booking immediately, forfeit payment and remove a guest from the platform. And the 16-guest cap applies whether or not anyone is being loud — a quiet dinner for 30 is still a violation of the occupancy limit.

The question is never whether the bartender is allowed. It is whether the event is allowed. Solve that and everything else is straightforward.

What we will and will not staff

We are a licensed, insured, RBS-certified bar service, and our position is simple. We staff events at properties where events are permitted and the owner has approved it, and where every guest is 21 or over. In practice that means:

Property typeDo events work here? What we need from you
Standard Airbnb / short-term rentalNoNothing — the event itself is against platform rules
Property listed as event-friendlyUsuallyA copy of the listing terms or written host approval
Estate or villa rented for eventsYesThe event agreement or venue contract
Licensed event venueYesVenue name; we send insurance certificates directly
Your own homeYesNothing beyond the usual walkthrough
Friend or family home, with permissionYesOwner aware and on board

The middle rows are where most of our private-party work sits. There is a real and growing market of properties in Los Angeles, Orange County, Palm Springs and San Diego that are rented specifically as event spaces — through venue marketplaces, direct with owners, or as estate rentals. These have parking, occupancy limits, noise plans and load-in access, because that is what they are for.

Guest counts, and why 16 matters

The 16-guest cap is the detail that quietly kills most rental party plans. Sixteen is smaller than almost any party worth hiring a bartender for. Our smallest package is built for 30 to 50 guests, which is already double the cap.

Cities layer their own limits on top. Many California jurisdictions set short-term rental occupancy by bedroom count, restrict daytime gatherings, or prohibit events at short-term rentals outright. Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Newport Beach and San Diego all regulate this differently and have all tightened rules in recent years. Look up the specific city, because assuming the rules travel is how hosts get fined.

Noise ordinances and the 10 p.m. wall

Noise is the enforcement mechanism for almost everything else. A gathering that stays under the neighbours' threshold rarely attracts attention; one that does not attracts all of it at once.

Most Southern California cities set quiet hours that commonly begin around 10 p.m. and run until early morning, with stricter thresholds in residential zones. Los Angeles additionally operates a Party House Ordinance that allows escalating enforcement and penalties against properties generating repeated nuisance complaints — aimed at the property, not just the guest, which is exactly why hosts are so cautious.

Practical fix that works: move the whole event two hours earlier. A 3 to 9 p.m. party at a residential property is a completely different experience from a 7 to 1 party, for the neighbours and for the host's deposit — and guests drink better and eat more when it starts in daylight.

The 21+ rule, and why we are strict about it

La Barra Co serves adult events only. Every guest must be 21 or over, and our bartenders check ID. We do not run a bar at a graduation party with high schoolers present, a quinceaƱera with teenagers, or a family event where minors are in the room.

This is not caution for its own sake. California's Responsible Beverage Service framework puts real obligations on the person pouring, furnishing alcohol to a minor is a serious offence, and our insurance is written on the basis that we work adult events. A host who quietly plans a mixed-age party and hopes it will be fine is putting the bartender, themselves and the property owner in the same bad position.

If your event has guests under 21, the right structure is a separate adult portion at a different time and place, or a non-alcoholic beverage program — the mocktail guide covers building a genuinely good one.

Insurance and who is actually exposed

At an event-permitted property, the paperwork is routine: we issue a certificate of insurance naming the venue or owner as additional insured, $2 million in general liability including liquor liability, at no charge, usually two to four weeks out.

At a property where events are not permitted, that paperwork does not fix anything, because the underlying activity is outside the terms the property is rented under. The exposure lands on the person who booked it. That is the real reason we ask the question early, and the real reason a host should ask it before they invite 60 people.

What to do instead, practically

Three routes that work, in rough order of how often we see them:

Whichever route you take, we run the same dry-hire model: you buy the alcohol, we bring the bar, bartenders, ice, mixers, glassware, garnish and tools, and nobody sells a drink. It is the simplest structure legally and the cheapest one for you.

Ask us before you book the house

The cheapest moment to find out an event will not work at a property is before you pay the deposit. Send us the property type, city, headcount and date, and we will tell you honestly whether it works and what it needs. If it does not, we will usually know a place nearby that does.

Frequently asked questions

Does Airbnb allow parties in 2026?

No. Airbnb announced a global party ban in August 2020 and made it permanent in June 2022. The policy also caps most listings at 16 guests. Individual hosts cannot simply opt out of the platform-wide ban for a standard listing, and violations can end the booking on the spot and remove the guest from the platform. Some properties are listed specifically as event-friendly or through venue platforms rather than as standard short-term rentals, and those are a different category.

Can I hire a bartender for an Airbnb in Los Angeles?

Not for a standard Airbnb booking, because the event itself is against the platform rules. What we do staff is properties where events are permitted: a licensed event venue, an estate rented explicitly for events, or a private residence where the owner has approved the event in writing. If you have written approval from the property owner and everyone attending is 21 or over, we can work there.

How many guests can you have at an Airbnb in California?

Airbnb caps most listings at 16 guests as part of its anti-party policy, and individual hosts often set lower limits in their house rules. On top of that, many California cities impose their own short-term rental occupancy limits. Exceeding the stated occupancy is a house rules violation regardless of how quiet the gathering is.

What are the noise rules for a party at a rental in California?

Noise is regulated at city level, and most Southern California cities set a quiet-hours window that commonly begins at 10 p.m. and runs to 7 a.m. Los Angeles also has a Party House Ordinance that allows escalating enforcement and penalties against properties that generate repeated nuisance complaints, and many cities apply stricter rules specifically to short-term rentals. Check the exact ordinance for the city the property sits in, because the rules differ between LA, Palm Springs, Newport and San Diego.

Do you serve events where minors are present?

No. La Barra Co works adult events only. Every guest must be 21 or over, and our RBS-certified bartenders check ID. This is not a preference, it is how we protect our licence, our insurance and your host. If any part of your guest list is under 21, we are not the right vendor for that event.

What is the difference between an Airbnb and an event venue?

An event venue is zoned, permitted and insured for gatherings, which means it has parking, occupancy limits, restrooms, load-in access and, usually, an existing relationship with vendors. A short-term rental is a home rented for sleeping. The distinction matters legally, practically and for insurance, and it is why an event at the wrong kind of property creates exposure for everyone involved — including the host who did not know.
