David Schmitd — The Bar Behind the Bar

Founder and head bartender of La Barra Co., the bilingual dry-hire mobile bar service built for Southern California weddings, quinceañeras, corporate events, and private celebrations from LA to Palm Springs.

Why La Barra Co. exists

La Barra Co. exists because in 2022 my sister was planning her wedding in Whittier and could not find a single mobile bar service in Southern California that was fully bilingual, all-inclusive, and priced for a real family budget. Every quote she got had one of three problems: a mandatory 20–22% gratuity buried in the fine print, English-only bartenders who couldn't chat with our tíos and abuela in Spanish, or a franchise-style intake process where nobody could actually tell her how many cases of Modelo she needed to buy for 140 guests.

She ended up hiring a bartender through a Facebook post, buying too much alcohol, running out of ice halfway through the reception, and paying an extra $800 in gratuity on top of the base rate. The night was still beautiful. But the bar experience was clearly a solvable problem, and nobody in the Southern California market was solving it for families like ours.

I spent the next six months getting California RBS-certified, working private events as a hired bartender to see how the market ran from the inside, and buying the equipment for what became the first La Barra Co. bar cart. In early 2023 I took the first paid booking — a 50-guest 40th birthday in Downey. Since then La Barra Co. has staffed 300+ private events across Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside, Ventura, and Palm Springs.

What makes La Barra Co. different

Three things, in order of what our clients tell us matters most:

1. Bilingual EN/ES service is standard, not an upsell

Roughly 40% of the market La Barra Co. serves is Latino families — Mexican-American, Salvadoran, Guatemalan, Colombian, Peruvian. Our bartenders speak Spanish fluently. Menus are printed bilingually. Contracts, intake calls, and post-event follow-ups happen in Spanish when clients prefer. This is not a marketing tagline. It's how the company was built from event one.

2. All-inclusive pricing — no surprise 20% gratuity

Every La Barra Co. quote is what you pay. Full stop. Setup, breakdown, glassware, ice, mixers, garnishes, and travel within our stated range are included. Gratuity is appreciated but never mandatory or auto-applied. This alone puts our all-in cost 30–40% below most Southern California competitors. See our 2026 pricing analysis for the math.

3. Founder-run — direct communication

Every booking passes through me directly. There is no account manager, no franchise dispatcher, no phone tree. If you text (415) 559-2981 during business hours, I answer within two hours. If you have a question 48 hours before your event, you're texting me — the person who will show up and run your bar. This is standard at La Barra Co. and impossible at any franchise mobile-bar competitor operating in this market.

"Founder-run beats franchise every time when the stakes are personal — and a wedding is the definition of personal. Direct communication with an owner is not a nice-to-have. It's the mechanism by which small things get fixed fast when the timeline compresses." — David Schmitd, Founder, La Barra Co.

The gap in the Southern California market

Before starting La Barra Co., I spent months mapping the mobile-bar landscape in Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside, and Ventura counties. Three patterns were clear:

The missing product: a professionally RBS-certified, bilingual, all-inclusive mobile bar priced for a $2,000 family celebration — not a $6,000 corporate event. La Barra Co. is that missing product.

The reception has been consistent. About 60% of our bookings come from Latino families who tried to book with a franchise, got quoted $2,800 with mandatory gratuity for an English-only bartender, and found us by asking friends or by Google-searching "bilingual mobile bar Los Angeles." See our bilingual Latino wedding menu guide for context on how we build Latin-forward cocktail programs.

Where we serve

La Barra Co. serves the full Southern California event market. Our operating range covers:

Travel fee applies beyond 25 miles from central Los Angeles ($75–$150). Palm Springs and Temecula are covered under our extended-range program.

"Before La Barra Co. we had two mobile-bar quotes in front of us. One was English-only and had a 20% mandatory gratuity on top of a $2,400 base rate. The other was cheap but the guy had no insurance. La Barra Co. was neither — bilingual, all-inclusive, and David personally walked us through our Costco shopping list. The bar was easily the smoothest-run part of our wedding." — Cristina M., La Barra Co. bride, Riverside (verified booking, October 2024)

How we work — the intake process

Every La Barra Co. booking runs through the same clean sequence:

  1. Text or WhatsApp us with your event date, guest count, and rough venue location.
  2. Same-day quote with one of our four packages (Intimate $795 / Signature $1,495 / Grand $2,795+) plus any travel fee — all-in, no surprises.
  3. 30% deposit secures your date. Contract sent by email or DocuSign.
  4. Custom Costco/BevMo shopping list two weeks before your event with exact bottle counts based on your guest count and drink preferences.
  5. Menu design consultation for Signature and Grand packages — 2 to 4 signature cocktails designed around your theme and cultural background. Bilingual menu printed.
  6. Day-of setup 60–90 minutes before guest arrival. Full bar cart, glassware, ice, mixers, garnishes, signage. RBS-certified bartenders in La Barra Co. uniform.
  7. Service, breakdown, clean-up. We leave the space cleaner than we found it.
  8. Post-event follow-up within 48 hours to close the loop and see if any bottles need to be returned to Costco.

What’s next for La Barra Co.

Two things are on the roadmap for 2026–2027. First, expansion into San Diego County (targeted for Q2 2026) to serve the growing Latino wedding market between LA and the border. Second, a dedicated quinceañera adulta product line built around the 40–50-year-old Latina milestone celebration — a market segment that grew significantly in 2024–2025 and is not well-served by generic wedding-bar vendors. See our early piece on quinceañera adulta bar service.

The core promise stays the same: founder-run, bilingual, all-inclusive, RBS-certified. If those four things match what you need, we should talk.
